Admission Policy

ADMISSION POLICY

St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Burdwan is a Minority, self-financing autonomous institution affiliated to the University of Burdwan. In accordance with its minority and autonomous status under the Indian Constitution, the College gives preference to Catholic/Christian applicants.

At the same time, admissions remain open to all eligible candidates from other communities—including socially and economically disadvantaged groups, differently-abled (Divyangjan) applicants, and those with excellence in sports—strictly on the basis of merit and fulfillment of the prescribed admission criteria and policy. 

 

ADMISSION POLICY:

 

Stated below is the Admission Policy of St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Burdwan:

 

1. General Principles & Admission Categories

The College reserves upto 30% of total seats for Christian minority applicants to maintain its institutional character.

Category Hierarchy

  • Category I: General Merit – Open to all applicants, selected strictly based on index marks.

  • Category II: Reserved Groups – Catholics, other Christians, SC/ST/OBC, and students from Jesuit-administered schools (Calcutta Province).

    • Note: A separate merit list may be prepared for Catholics, followed by other Christian denominations.

  • Category III: Special Needs & Talents – Economically challenged, Divyangjan, and outstanding sportspersons (State-level or higher).

  • Category IV: Institutional Ties – Wards of Alumni (with a record of service), children of Defence personnel.

In alignment with Jesuit educational objectives, preference may be given to local, rural, tribal, and disadvantaged students.

2. Eligibility & Academic Requirements

  • Candidates must have passed Class XII / +2 or equivalent from a recognized board.

  • Applicants must meet the qualifying criteria prescribed by the University/College authority.

  • SC/ST candidates must provide valid certificates issued by competent West Bengal authorities (SDO/ADM/DWO) prior to the deadline.

  • A gap of more than 4 years requires valid justification and specific approval from the Principal.
  • All UG programmes follow the Four-Year Honours format with a three-year exit option, per UGC guidelines.

3. Admission Process & Confirmation

  1. Application: Submitted via the online portal and shortlisted based on index marks or entrance tests.

  2. Verification: Candidates must undergo physical document verification.

  3. Finalization: Admission is only confirmed once document verification is complete, the name appears on the official rolls, and full fees are paid.

4. Required Documentation and Special Provisions

At the time of admission, candidates must produce original documents for verification. 

Note: Laminated mark sheets and color photocopies are strictly rejected. The following documents are required:

  • Class XII Marksheet and Admit Card/Hall Ticket.

  • Baptism Certificate (for Christian applicants).

  • Valid Caste/Category certificates (where applicable).

  • Migration and Passing Certificates.

Special Provisions: The Calcutta Jesuit Province prioritizes the welfare of the marginalized. Preferential treatment is given to local students, Tribals, rural candidates, first-generation learners, and children of single parents. 

International students are directed to apply via the Government of India’s "Study in India" portal.

5. Transparency in Admission Process Policy (no Donation / no Agents for admission)

St. Xavier’s College maintains a strict "No Donation" policy. No funds are sought or accepted in exchange for admission. Any attempt by third-party agents to collect money in the name of the institution should be reported immediately to the management.

Official Fees: Only fees approved by the Governing Board (for maintenance, staff welfare, etc.) are charged.

Financial Aid: A substantial portion of the annual budget is reserved for scholarships, freeships, and concessions to ensure that economically challenged students are not denied education.

 

6. Attendance, Discipline, and Refunds

To maintain academic standards, the College mandates a minimum of 75% attendance for eligibility in internal assessments and semester examinations. Admission may be revoked at any time if documents are found to be fraudulent or eligibility criteria are not met.

Refund Policy (UGC Compliant):

  • The College follows the refund guidelines issued by the UGC from time to time. Refunds will be processed only after completion of the admission process.
  • Students must submit a formal application for refund within the timeline notified on the College website. Requests received after the stipulated deadline may not be considered.
  • All refunds will be made strictly in accordance with the applicable UGC regulations.
  • In all matters regarding admission, the decision of the Governing Body and the Principal remains final and binding.
