INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS (IKS) CELL

The IKS Cell at St. Xavier's College, Burdwan promotes the study and integration of traditional Indian knowledge systems into modern education, fostering appreciation for India's rich intellectual heritage.

ABOUT IKS

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of Indian Knowledge Systems — the vast body of knowledge developed in India over millennia across diverse fields including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, linguistics, arts, and architecture.

OBJECTIVES

  • To promote awareness and appreciation of India's traditional knowledge systems

  • To integrate IKS perspectives into the existing curriculum

  • To encourage research on traditional Indian knowledge

  • To organize seminars, workshops, and lectures on IKS topics

  • To connect students with India's rich intellectual and cultural heritage


KEY AREAS OF INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS

  • Mathematics & Astronomy: Vedic mathematics, Aryabhata, Brahmagupta

  • Medicine: Ayurveda, Yoga, traditional healing practices

  • Philosophy: Vedanta, Nyaya, Samkhya, Buddhist and Jain philosophy

  • Linguistics: Sanskrit grammar (Panini's Ashtadhyayi), classical literature

  • Architecture: Vastu Shastra, temple architecture, water management systems

  • Agriculture: Traditional farming practices, seed conservation

  • Ecology: Traditional environmental knowledge and conservation
