Department of Sociology

About the Department

The Department of Sociology, St. Xavier’s College, Burdwan started its journey from 11th July 2014 and since then they have been engaging the students to understand the social reality around us. The Department offers an Honours degree following a CBCS pattern and CCFUP programme (modified structure under NEP, 2020) for Bachelor of Arts (B.A). At the Undergraduate level, we look forward to students from various academic backgrounds, which include sciences, humanities, and commerce as well.
The Department wishes to be an institution on an unending voyage for locating “the social” and experiencing while understanding, analyzing, and critiquing every bit of the society we inhabit. We invite young passionate minds to join us on this voyage to plunge into the world of the social.
We believe that learning is a way of life; thus, we aim to sharpen the students' analytical capabilities and powerful insights so that they can look at and analyze the social world differently from how one is accustomed to do. Celebrating these experiences in the process of learning, the discipline has been made interesting by equipping field trips, workshops, seminars, audio-visual lectures, assignments, surveys, report writing, term papers, dissertations, PowerPoint presentations by students along with the regular theory classes in the spacious theory classrooms for Sociology students of all the three years studying the Honours course.
The Department is also very proud of our student's academic performances. It was a unique event in the discipline’s history in the University where all the successive ranks- University Ranks of 1st Class 1st, 1st Class 2nd, and 1st Class 3rd from the batch 2017-2020 were entitled to our college among all the colleges under BU. The Department is extremely proud to have university toppers from each batch. Not only in academics, but our students have also excelled in various other co-curricular activities as well since we believe in the “all-round personality developments of our students”.
The Department dreams to be an honest and the best destination for all enthusiasts who are passionate about social administration and service. The department will always focus on providing undergraduate students with the best exposers of academics by building up the best library, appointing the best faculties, bringing in international academic collaborations with eminent academicians, as well as hands-on experience in the field by exposing them to the best sites of social work across the country. It also envisions providing ample employment opportunities to its students. The Department promises to produce the best sociologists in the country.
