Introduction

St. Xavier’s College, Burdwan was established in the year 2014 as a part of the golden jubilee project of St. Xavier’s School, Burdwan. It is the second college launched by the Jesuits of Calcutta Province, making it the 50th Jesuit Institution of Higher Education in India and the fourth in Bengal.  Having successfully stepped into its tenth year of academic excellence, the college espouses the principle objective of Jesuit Education which is to form “men and women for others”.  The institution was inaugurated on 11th July, 2014 by Bishop Cyprian Monis of Asansol and has since then been steered by the leadership of the Principal, Rev Dr. Fr. G. Paul Arockiam, S.J.

Sprawled across 5.319 acres of environmentally sustainable and botanically enriched campus area, the college strives to meet the long-standing need and demand in the region for good quality higher education in English Medium. It is affiliated to The University of Burdwan while also being AICTE approved and ISO 9001:2015 Certified. The institution began its journey by offering Honours Degree Courses in various disciplines of Arts, Science and Commerce like English, Accountancy (Commerce), Biotechnology, Computer Science, Sociology and Geography. Within three years of its inception, that is, by 2017 the institution expanded its academic base to include Masters Degree Programme in English. Exhibiting sincere consistency in academic growth, the institution added two new Degree Programs, BCA and BBA, in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The college attracts students not only from the neighbouring districts and states, but also from Bangladesh, making for a rich cultural experience on campus. With a student-teacher ratio of almost 27:1, the college has built its foundation on a highly favourable teaching-learning experience. The college has taken endeavours to open up several units under Extension Service Programme/ outreach committee like – AICUF, NSS, X-EVE and X- REACH to encourage students for social services to make society a better place. The college since its days of inception has always tried to provide the best infrastructure to the students and in turn facilitate the holistic development of the students and create better human beings for the future.
